We are looking for volunteers prepared to stay at least two weeks at Peniche during the period 15th August to 15th November 2015. The volunteers will be required to perform standardised counts of migrating birds from dawn until 10 am and from 3 pm to dusk each day, except for days with storms, when counting will have to take place for the full day.
The counts take place on the roof of Nau dos Corvos restaurant and we use Leica telescopes which the project provides.
We seek two types of volunteers: Main Counters and Counters. To qualify as a Main Counter you must have proven experience of counting migrating seabirds, both pelagic and non-pelagic species. You will be required to keep notes and track of numbers and to feed these results into a database every evening, so familiarisation with computers is a must. To qualify as a Counter you do not need to have previous experience, but must have your own binoculars. Both volunteers must be outwardgoing and communicative and prepared to inform visitors of the project, as long as it will not disturb counting.
We can offer:
For those staying at least four weeks and serve as Main Counters: free flight from northern Europe to Lisbon. Free accommodation. Transport from accommodation to Cabo Carvoeiro.
For those staying shorter periods: Free accommodation. Transport from accommodation to Cabo Carvoeiro.
We are in the process of ascertaining further sponsorship and it is possible that we may be able to include food, but at the moment we cannot promise this.
If you wish to apply, please send an email with your previous experience, name, email, country of travel origin and any relevant information (such as references) you think we may need to Erik Hirschfeld
